Thomson's Modern Cocktail Bar could achieve $98,000

A Modern Cocktail Bar (1931), a painting by Alfred Reginald Thomson, could make £40,000-60,000 ($65,240-97,860) at Christie's on January 16.

It will headline a sale of food and drink themed art and objects in London.

The painting was commissioned for the newly opened cocktail bar at the Saville Theatre in London, and shows contemporary luminaries of the stage seated around it.

Thomson (1894-1979) was a commercial artist who produced campaigns for the Ministry of Information and Ealing Studios among many others.

He worked as the official artist to the RAF during the second world war and was the last to be awarded a gold medal for painting in the 1948 Olympics in London.

Copper Pots and Pans, an Overturned Candlestick Holder and a Candle Snuffer on a Stone Ledge by Floris Van Schooten (circa 1590-1656) is valued at £25,000-35,000 ($40,775-57,085).

Little is known about Van Schooten, a still-life painter, except that he was a Catholic who moved to Harlem to escape religious persecution during the 1600s.

A number of the items in the painting feature in other works by the artist.

A rare elephant bird egg discovered in Madagascar is estimated at £20,000-30,000 ($32,620-48,930).

The bird, which could grow to around 11 feet tall and weigh up to 1,100 lbs, became extinct sometime between the 14th and 17th centuries.

Earlier this year another example sold for £66,675 ($101,613) at Christie's London.
