A bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir William Reid Dick and a late George III beechwood chair from Sir Winston’s home in Kent will go under the hammer at Bonhams on November 18.

The bust by Sir William Reid Dick (1879-1961) is a bronze portrait head of Sir Winston Churchill on an integral plinth base, inscribed W REID DICK/1942.

The 11 inches-high bust is estimated to sell for £3,000-5,000.

The Royal Academy commissioned a bronze of Churchill from Reid Dick in 1942, and it was reputedly only after the intervention of George VI that Churchill could be persuaded to take the time to sit for Reid Dick.

The plaster maquette for this sculpture was sold at Bonhams, London on 16 March 16, 2004.

The second Churchill item in the sale is a late George III beechwood open armchair.

It features an arched top-rail above a pierced spindle-filled back and downswept arms on inswept supports, above an upholstered seat and squab cushion on ring-turned tapering legs.

The chair carries an estimate of £1,000-1,500.

Following the death of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) the chair was sold as part of his estate by Knight Frank and Rutley. The sale included pictures, drawings and prints, European and Oriental porcelain, antique and reproduction furniture and ornamental on January 19, 1966.

It was purchased by the antique dealer John Day of Burlington Arcade, London and has stayed in the family by descent.

The Bonhams sale of Fine English Furniture and Works of Art will be held in Bond Street on November 18.
