Zeng Fanzhi's Bathroom to lead Christie's Asia+ auction at $109,000

Christie's has announced a mid-season auction of Asian 20th century and contemporary art in Hong Kong on April 5, with Zeng Fanzhi's Bathroom expected to lead.

Zeng Fanzhi is the leading Asian contemporary artist, holding the record at $23m

The "highly curated" sale will offer collectors a "panoramic view of Asian art", with Zeng Fanzhi's Bathroom selling with an $833,300-$1.2m estimate.

The work's appeal lies in "its uniqueness and its significance to the era in which it was created", according to Christie's.

"With its distorted figurative depictions of naked flesh: 'corporeality' directly infuses the senses," the auction house explains.

The sale is dominated by Zeng Fanzhi, with the work on paper Sky also set to feature. Originating from his celebrated Mask series, the 2004 work is valued at $64,100-89,700.

Zeng Fanzhi's The Last Supper holds the world record for any piece of contemporary Asian art at $23m, after selling at Sotheby's Hong Kong 40th anniversary sale in October.

Zao Wou-Ki's mural in the Lisbon station stands next to works from the likes of Japan's Yayoi Kusama

An untitled Zao Wou-Ki ceramic work, created for the mural in the Garo do Oriente metro station in Lisbon, will sell with a $83,300-109,000 estimate.

At last year's Beijing art week, the first auctions held on China's mainland by Sotheby's, the record for Zao Wou-Ki's work was set at $14.6m by Abstraction, a 1958 masterpiece from his "oracle bone" period.
