Sky sold for $254,016, and is now the most valuable work on paper from the Chinese artist, whose Last Supper set a $23m record for any piece of contemporary Asian art at Sotheby's last year.

The Asia+ auction marks Christie's first mid-season sale of Asian modern and contemporary art, offering a "highly curated" and "panoramic view of Asian art".

Selling at the top of the sale was another piece from Zeng Fanzhi, Bathroom, which proved popular with collectors due to its "uniqueness and its significance to the era in which it was created," according to Christie's.

"With its distorted figurative depictions of naked flesh: 'corporeality' directly infuses the senses."

Sotheby's also auctioned 20th century Chinese art on April 6 in Hong Kong, led by Zao Wou Ki's 16.03.88.
