Abraham Lincoln handwritten note makes $16,000 in online sale

A handwritten note by Abraham Lincoln, written on April 5, 1865 - just days before his assassination, sold for $15,757 at RR Auction on August 13.

It relates to a captured Confederate general named Rufus Barringer. Lincoln visited him during his incarceration and, impressed with his manners, wrote this short missive allowing him to receive well-wishers.

The note allows Barrington to see friends

It reads in full: "Will the Sec. of War please see & hear Gen. Barringer of N. C. & oblige him if you consistently can in seeing some friends."

Barringer became a suspected conspirator in the assassination when the president was killed just over a week later, as he was among the last people to see him alive.
