Catherine Aragon letter
Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of Henry VIII

Catherine wrote to a Spanish cardinal in 1529, begging the Catholic Church to prevent Henry from divorcing her. Her failure to conceive a son meant that the throne was slipping out of his family's grasp.

While the church refused to annul the marriage, this didn't stop the king - who set in motion the reformation and installed himself at the head of the Church of England.

Catherine lived out the rest of her life at Kimbolton Castle in Cambridgeshire. She remained popular with the British public, who saw her as a sympathetic figure.

It could be argued she was relatively lucky. Her replacement, Anne Boleyn, was beheaded.

We have this phenomenal signed document from Henry VIII available. It relates to a loan made to Sir Thomas Gresham, who went on to found London's Royal Exchange.

Other lots in the sale include letters from George Sand, Brigitte Bardot and Coco Chanel.
