Jay-Z's Brooklyn Nets jerseys to auction for charity

Ten Brooklyn Nets basketball jerseys signed by rapper Jay-Z are to be sold through the official NBA Auctions website.

Hard Knock Life: the auction proceeds will benefit Carter's own charity

Opening today (October 18) and closing on October 31, the jerseys are being sold to raise funds for his Shawn Carter (Jay-Z's real name) Foundation, which provides funds to those in need of financial assistance to gain a higher education. Since its inception, the foundation has given over $1.6m in scholarships to students throughout the nation.

The jerseys, which all have "Carter 4" printed on the reverse, were part of a run of 800 that were created especially for Jay-Z's eight shows at the Nets' Barclays Centre to mark its opening.

The Brooklyn-born rapper has long been a fan of the Nets and even part-owns the team, which is moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn for the start of the 2012-13 season.

Five black and five white jerseys will be sold, with Adidas assisting with the herringbone design to match the court at the Barclays Centre. Each has been autographed "PEACE JAY Z" on the tag sewn onto the lower left front hem. With a starting bid of $500, one of the jerseys has already hit $610 after just a few hours of bidding.

Earlier this year, Jay-Z and Kayne West auctioned off the wrecked Maybach '57 that was used in the video for the Grammy-Award winning track Otis, in order to raise funds for Save the Children. The $350,000 car was expected to bring $100,000 despite being smashed up by the stars, but ended up realising only $60,000.
