Martin Luther King signed book to auction for $8,000?

A copy of Sarah Patton Boyle's The Desegregated Heart, signed by a host of famous civil rights activists, including Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, will auction at PBA Galleries.

The lot is to star in the May 8 Historical Autographs and Manuscripts auction with an estimate of $6,000-8,000.

The book is signed by a number of famous civil rights activists

Boyle was among the most prominent white civil rights activists during the 1950s and 1960s, working closely with the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) and other organisations against segregation in America.

As a woman speaking out for civil rights in rural Virginia, she soon found herself the target of a fierce backlash from some members of the community; at one point a burning cross was placed in her yard.

The book is signed by the author and a number of other activists besides King and Parks, including James L Farmer Jr, who organised the 1961 Freedom Ride against segregated transport, and Bayard Rustin, who led the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

An archive of materials relating to the development of Hollywoodland, the exclusive community in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking Los Angeles, is valued at $5,000-8,000.

The lot includes maps, photographs and architectural drawings taken between 1923 and 1925, which show the earliest phases of some of the most iconic buildings of the 1920s and 1930s.
