Niccolo Machiavelli signed letter achieves 87% increase on estimate

A signed letter from Niccolo Machiavelli has sold for £15,000 ($22,222) at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury in London, achieving an increase of 87.5% on an £8,000 estimate.

Machiavelli is best known for his infamous treatise The Prince

It dates to October, 1516 and is addressed to the head of the Papal navy. It references Machiavelli's visit to Livorno, Tuscany earlier that year.

Machiavelli was a Florentine diplomat and author who is best-known for his political treatise The Prince, which gained notoriety for its endorsement of immoral and underhand tactics.

The term "Machiavellian" is still used today.
