Today in History... Winston Churchill makes his first speech

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill is one of the most famous and celebrated Britons in history. His leadership during the Second World War, and in particular his speeches made him a symbol of leadership far beyond his country's shores.

Back in 1901, he had just become a Members of Parliament in the UK, and first rose to his feet to offer a retort to a statement of Liberal Prime Minister Lloyd George. The two men later had to sit next to one another in a coalition government following WW1.

Churchill was dead set against the policy of appeasing Germany's Nazi government during the 1930s, and this gave him credibility when it became untenable. During his first term as Prime Minister from 1940-45, Churchill's determined words broadcast hope to a country with its back to the wall.

Naturally, rare Churchillian memorabilia can be much sought after.

Last year a dilapidated sofa was saved from a skip to sell at auction, after it was pointed out that it had belonged to Churchill. Estimated at just £80, it sold for £7,500 - 90 times what was expected. Likewise a bronze bust of the man beat its £3,000-5,000 estimate to reach £12,000.

Just a few weeks back, a half-smoked cigar which Churchill was distracted from finishing brought £4,500.

Those sorry to have missed these may wish to take a look at the following pieces which are currently available: a signed photograph of Winston, a letter with his autograph and even a typescript of his answers to Parliamentary questions annotated in his handwriting.
