An archive of seven letters concerning Winston Churchill's dog Rufus II are on offer in Nate D Sanders' latest sale, which closes on November 20, with a minimum bid of $12,000.

They were sent between the prime minister and his dog sitter, a Miss Lobban, between 1948 and 1961.

The auction house commented on their touching relationship: "Churchill was so taken with Rufus that he ate in the dining room with the rest of the Churchill family and sat on his master's lap while watching movies.

"According to one story, while watching 'Oliver Twist', Churchill covered Rufus' eyes during the scene where the dog was about to be drowned. He said to Rufus: 'Don't look now, dear. I'll tell you about it afterwards.''"
