Bermuda Railway memorabilia collection to lead Railwayana sale

A collection of memorabilia pertaining to the Bermuda Railway will lead Dreweatts and Bloomsbury's Railwayana auction in London on June 12.

The line ran for 21.7 miles between the archipelagos of Somerset and Saint George, with a significant portion of the track laid across bridges - resulting in a vast maintenance bill to combat corrosion.

Bermuda railway collection
The collection consists of a range of materials relating to the Bermuda railway

It ran for just 17 years between 1931 and 1948 before being shut down due to the cost.

The lot consists of seven issues of the Bermuda Railway magazine (from 1932 and 1933), an album of photographs, a set of timetables and a vast range of other assorted curiosities.

It was accumulated by Gladys Eva Kitchen, wife of Harold Jennings Kitchen - who worked as the railway's chief engineer, and is valued at £4,000-6,000 ($6,680-10,000).

Other items likely to perform well include Thomas Talbot Bury's Six Coloured Views on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, and Six Coloured Views on the London and Birmingham Railway, which are selling as a single lot and carry an estimate of £3,500-5,000 ($5,845-8,351).

The works are exceptionally rare and are described as being in particularly good condition, with their original wrappers and featuring only light spotting and soiling.
