Illuminated book of hours from 15th century valued at $127,500

An illuminated book of hours dating to around 1440 is valued at £60,000-80,000 ($95,586-127,448) ahead of Sotheby's auction of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts.

The sale will take place in London on December 3.

Book of Hours 1440
The book was produced by the Master of the Munich Golden Legend

The manuscript was illuminated in Paris by the Master of the Munich Golden Legend for a woman named Margaret - who is depicted in the book.

The illustrator was active between 1420 and 1460, and is known to have collaborated with the Bedford Master on the Sobieski Hours, which features in the royal library at Windsor Castle, England.

He is easily identifiable by his practice of outlining areas of colour and indicating facial features in black.

The lot is comprised of 164 leaves and is bound in 18th century red morocco. Despite some small stains and marks it is in excellent condition.

Another book of hours, this time dating to 1500, could make £30,000-50,000 ($47,793-79,655).

The second manuscript features a unique depiction of Satan being cast out of paradise

The book is one of a series produced in Paris by a group of artists, identifiable by their technique of placing miniatures in the borders of almost every page.

The manuscript is bound in late 18th century beige velvet and is in fine condition, despite pigment loss in some of the borders.

Both are consigned on behalf of the Lutheran Church of America.
