Rediscovering Nancy Drew book sells from author's collection

A copy of Rediscovering Nancy Drew was the highest selling lot in an Ohio auction of items belonging to the original author of the detective series on December 8.

The Nancy Drew books were written by a syndicate of authors, with Benson the first and top contributor who is widely attibuted with developing the character



Published by Edward Stratemeyer, the books were released under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene but were actually written by a number of authors, with Mildred Wirt Benson the most prolific.

Benson, a journalist, contributed to 23 of the first 30 books to be published. The first title appeared in 1930.

Rediscovering Nancy Drew, published in 1995, details how the series was created. Benson inscribed the copy at auction to her daughter. It sold for $2,150.

A further collection of 10 books by sci-fi writer Andre Norton, who had a personal relationship with Benson, sold for $3,200, with nine of them made out to the Nancy Drew author. Her typewriter made $825, while the desk that she wrote at achieved $525.
