Suspense Comics #3 offered at Heritage

A rare CGC 9.2-graded copy of Suspense Comics #3 (1944) is to headline a comics and animation art sale at Heritage Auctions.

It features artist Alex Schomburg’s iconic Nazi bondage cover.

Comics Nazi bondage

Nazis appear as villains in US comic books throughout the 1930s and 1940s

The lot is the finest known and looks set to break the record for the issue, set at $173,275 for a 9.0-graded copy in 2015.

Bidding starts at $95,600.

The comic is from Edgar Church’s legendary Mile High Collection.

Church (1888-1978) was a commercial artist who accumulated a vast collection of Golden Age comics, around 18,000 in all, most of which were in mint or near mint condition.

It was discovered in 1977 by Chuck Rozanski, proprietor of Mile High Comics (hence the name).

A CGC 9.2 copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963) is expected to make in excess of $83,650.

While this wasn’t Spider-Man’s first outing in print (he appeared in a 1962 edition of Amazing Fantasy #15), it was his first dedicated series.

He would become one of Marvel’s most popular characters.

Heritage comments: “Early Silver Age Marvels are almost impossible to find in decent grade for so many reasons, including low print runs, low paper quality, overhangs, ‘Marvel chipping’ and, of course, the fact that every kid read the heck out of them.

“This impressive pedigree copy appears nearly flawless in every way.”

The sale runs from May 18-20.
