Vivien Leigh’s personal estate to sell at Sotheby’s

Sotheby’s is to offer the personal estate of legendary stage and screen actress Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) in London on September 26.

Vivien Leigh art

Vivien Leigh carried this copy of Gone with the Wind on set

Leigh is best remembered for her screen roles, particularly as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind and Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Among the highlights of the auction is her personal copy of Margaret Mitchell’s classic 1936 novel Gone with the Wind.

It’s valued at £5,000-7,000 ($6,452-9,032).

This was the copy that Leigh carried with her at all times while on set.

Mitchell has inscribed it with a poem written especially for Leigh.

There’s also a gold ring gifted to her by former husband Laurence Olivier.

Leigh and Olivier embarked on an affair in 1937, after meeting on the set of Fire Over England. They married three years later, in 1940.

This ring is inscribed “Laurence Olivier Vivien Eternally”.

It’s valued at just £400-600 ($516-774), a figure that looks low when you consider it links two of the 20th century’s most acclaimed actors.

In 2015, a dress Leigh wore in Gone with the Wind sold for $139,000 in a major auction of memorabilia from the film at Heritage Auctions.
