1939 Lincoln-Zephyr 'Scrape' to sell on June 24

The astonishing 1939 Lincoln-Zephyr “Scrape” custom will lead RM Sotheby’s Santa Monica classic car sale on June 24.

The car’s design is inspired by the Streamline Moderne movement of the late 1930s, which emphasised curves and flowing lines.

Lincoln Zephyr Scrape

The front of the car is from a 1941 Lincoln-Zephyr, while the back is from the 1939 model

It’s nicknamed Scrape as once the hydraulics are lowered, the body sits completely flat on the road.

It proved a sensation on its 1998 concours debut and was immediately booked as the headline feature for a score of car shows across the US.

RM Sotheby’s comments: “Scrape became an international phenomenon…

“Scrape’s pioneering streamlined design and stance proved so popular that Mattel created a sold-out run of 1/18-scale Hot Wheels toys commemorating the car.

“This uncommon honor further cemented Scrape’s status as arguably the most influential show car of the period.”

The car has recently undergone significant renovation and has been repainted black (from an eye watering shade of purple).

A 1941 Kozy Coach travel trailer is another intriguing lot.

It’s also designed in the streamline moderne style, with exquisite contemporary detailing – including an art deco doorbell.

As metal was in short supply due to the war effort, the trailer is built from Masonite. Few of these wartime trailers were made and even fewer have survived.

This one is valued at $100,000-200,000.
