1950 Ferrari 166 MM to wow Amelia Island

RM Sotheby’s has announced a 1950 Ferrari 166 MM will be among the star consignments of its Amelia Island sale on March 10-11.

The car is number 27 of the 32 specimens built and has been maintained with extraordinary care, with all matching numbers components.

It has a storied racing record and in recent years has also been entered into an array of concours, where it picked up a string of accolades.

The auction house expects it to sell for around $8m-10m.

Shelby Myers, RM Sotheby’s car specialist, said: “The 166 MM is, unequivocally, one of the most important sports cars ever constructed…

“…its significance in the marque’s history cannot be overstated.

“In the rarefied air that is Ferrari’s 166 MM, 0058 M is one of the best of the very best.

 “It possesses all of the critical attributes a collector wants in a Ferrari sports racer: rarity, period racing history in Italy and the U.S., a high level of originality, as well as a successful show career.”

There’s also an exceptional 1936 Lancia Astura, which is valued at $2m-2.5m.

The model was designed by Pinin Farina, which would later work with Ferrari, and displays the elegant bodywork redolent of its era.

RM Sotheby’s points out that a near identical Astura received Best of Show at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
