1955 Ferrari 250 Europa hits $2.2m at Bonhams

Bonhams sold a 1955 Ferrari 250 Europa GT alloy for $2.2m in its Amelia Island auction on March 9.

Ferrari intended chassis 0389 to compete in the 1955 Mille Miglia, but it wasn’t completed in time.

The 250 Europa GT has been very well cared for

It remained in Italy until 1960, when it was sold to an American collector and shipped to Los Angeles. In the intervening years it passed through the hands of several owners – all of whom have kept it in pristine order.

The model is one of only 27 to feature the attractive Pininfarina coupe coachwork.

Bonhams was emphatic before the sale: “It is, without exaggeration, the ultimate performing example of the handsome Europa GT, having been originally intended for the 1955 Mille Miglia, subsequently restored and maintained to breathtaking condition, documented with original factory paperwork, and tended by some of the finest Ferrari craftsmen in the United States.

“…[It] would be the ideal machine, with its epic performance and spacious, comfortable cabin, to enter in the Mille Miglia Storica once more, or any other driving event such as the Copperstate 1000, California Mille or Colorado Grand.”

A 1954 Arnolt Bristol prototype roadster realised $324,500.

The racer is an unusual amalgamation of British engine (Bristol), American chassis (Arnolt) and Italian body (Bertone) and achieved a string of successes at Sebring and Le Mans throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

The present example is one of only 142 made.
