1995 McLaren F1 to star in Bonhams car auction

A 1995 McLaren F1 will star in Bonhams’ August 18 Quail Lodge classic car auction.

The chassis number is 044. Why's that important?

McLaren F1 US

The F1 remains one of the world's fastest road-legal cars

Because 044 was the first F1 shipped to the US and also the first of the seven to be approved for road use in the country.

With a top speed of over 240mph, it’s no wonder the authorities were nervous.

The F1 was the result of British marque McLaren’s attempt to build the ultimate supercar.

No expense was spared on its construction; the engine is insulated with gold.

The car was designed primarily for road use, but also proved a world beater on the track – racking up a series of victories in the 1990s, including the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Today only 106 exist.

As you might expect, the F1 is the jewel in the crown for most owners and so they very rarely come to auction.

The auction house comments: “Similar to the legendary Ferrari GTO, the McLaren F1 dominated and defined an era.

“Today, these rare, world-changing supercars almost never come up for sale – let alone one that has never had an accident – and it is very likely there will never again be an opportunity to purchase a single-owner F1 with such provenance and history.”

There’s no estimate for the car, but others have sold for well over $10m.
