Paul McCartney DB5

Paul McCartney bought this Aston Martin new in 1964.

The stunning car is now set to be offered in Bonhams’ December 2 Bond Street Sale in London.

Paul McCartney DB5

McCartney owned the vehicle from 1964 to 1970

1964 was one of the biggest years in Beatles history. The band stormed America with an explosive performance on the Ed Sullivan Show and a subsequent arena tour.

McCartney was clearly in a celebratory mood when he returned.

The car is mentioned in an almost parodic profile of his life in Swinging London: “Bachelor Paul, 25 (his favorite ‘bird’ is 21-year old actress Jane Asher) is a movie addict, loves 'the look of London' and tools around town in a spiffy blue Aston Martin DB5”.

Yeah baby.

McCartney sold the car in 1970. It went through a series of owners and two major restorations: in 2002 and 2012.

Over the years, the original “spiffy blue” favoured by McCartney was replaced with the silver most commonly associated with the James Bond series.

The interior is finished in red leather, while the backseat features an embroidered panel celebrating its legendary first owner.

It’s now expected to sell for around £1.2m-1.5m ($1.6m-2m).

That would place it in the upper echelons of Beatles cars, not far off the $2.3m record paid for Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls-Royce in 1985.

The fact McCartney owned it for around six years at the height of the band’s success will make it desirable to Beatles fans as well as car collectors.
