A collection of artefacts from the English Civil War, including a large iron cannonball, is offered at Hanson’s Auctioneers.

The lot will also include a set of human toe bones, musket flints and balls and four brass knuckles.

Civil War artefacts

The artefacts were found in gardens around Leicestershire

The items were all found around the town of Lutterworth, Leicestershire.

This was the site of the Battle of Naseby, one of the most decisive moments in the war and its last major engagement.

In June 1645, the royalist army of King Charles I had just taken the city of Leicester and was headed north.

En route it was met by the republican army of Sir Thomas Fairfax.

The royalists were roundly trounced in the skirmish, losing over 80% of their troops.

Charles escaped to Scotland, but was turned over to the republicans a year later.

The items will be offered with an estimate of just £50-80 ($65-104).

Auctioneer Charles Hanson told the BBC: "We understand [the cannon ball] was discovered by someone clearing their vegetable patch.

"The iron cannon ball measures five inches in diameter and it's certainly a heavy weight. It was found quite a depth underground.

"It's amazing what objects can be found in a garden."
