The highly anticipated sale of the Rocky Mountain Collection of sports cards at Memory Lane, Inc has been topped by a superb example of the 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth.

The auction closed online on August 24, with the PSA 8 (NM-MT) graded example in red selling for $66,000 - an 11.3% increase on the previous record of $59,250, set by Robert Edward Auctions in 2013.

The Goudey cards, released in a set of four, are the only known official rookie cards for Babe Ruth. Card #53 in yellow and card #149 in red show the same image, while the other two (#144 and #53) depict him warming up.

In total, the collection sold for $2.2m, with baseball, football, basketball, hockey and boxing cards included. It ranks third on the All-Time Finest PSA Set Registry and is 69% complete, based on Joe Orlando's book The Top 200 Sportscards in the Hobby.

"The Rocky Mountain Collection contains one of the most impressive runs of key cards that has come to market in recent memory, including a host of iconic rookies in high grade," said PSA president Joe Orlando.
