$1m Princess Diana White House dress expected to catch the eye in Toronto

A number of gowns worn by Princess Diana will come to auction in Toronto on June 23 at Waddington's auctioneers.

14 dresses will be up for sale, including the dress worn by Lady Di at a White House state dinner in 1985, when she danced with John Travolta. It has a low end estimate of £638,000.

There will also be three dresses from her 1997 Vanity Fair shoot for collectors and investors to buy.

The dresses were designed by such stars of the fashion scene as Victor Edelstein, Zandra Rhodes and the princess' favourite, Catherine Walker.

The dresses were part of a collection belonging to Floridian Maureen Rorech Dunkel, who bought them at a Christie's sale in 1997, eight weeks before Lady Diana died.

A garment belonging to the princess that was once thought lost sold for £192,000 in 2010. Diana had worn the dress to her first official engagement as the fiancée of Prince Charles.

Lady Di does her Sandy impression

The appetite for royal memorabilia is still strong. A dress worn by Kate Middleton at a university fashion show recently sold for £78,000.
