Amelia Earhart collectibles could soar thanks to Hollywood

Purdue University in Indiana, US has the biggest collection of memorabilia about the pioneering explorer Amelia Earhart.

The aviator vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, during her second attempt to fly around the world.

Now, the University hopes that a new biopic of Earhart's life will renew interest in their collection. The film, entitled Amelia, is released on Friday, October 23.

Purdue's memorabilia includes the world's largest collection of papers and artefacts about Earhart.

The explorer was a career counsellor at the Indiana university between 1935-1937, and was also an adviser to the school's Department of Aeronautics.

Today, Earhart is regarded not only as a pioneer of aviation, but also of women's rights.

Purdue won't be the only place that hopes that Earhart memorabilia gets a boost from Hollywood.

Auction houses will also have their eyes on the film's impact.

A pair of Earhart's flight goggles, worn during her historic 1932 solo transatlantic flight, brought an incredible $141,600 at Profiles in History's California auction earlier this month.

And it wouldn't be the first time a successful movie has boosted the memorabilia market.

Items related to the famous Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger brought record prices earlier this year.

Coincidentally or not, it chimed with the release of Public Enemies, a Dillinger biopic starring Hollywood A-listers Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.
