Babe Ruth's ball swings to $2k at Heritage

Here's an update on Heritage Auction Galleries' Sunday Sports Auction, held at the end of last month (February 21).

Among the big hitters was a historic OAL (Bernard) baseball bearing the signatures of legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig: the "two most desirable names to be featured on a multi-signed baseball, according to Heritage.

This Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig signed
baseball sold for $2,031.50

The ball carried an estimate of $2,000-4,000, slightly below the final price achieved by another Ruth-Gehrig signed baseball sold at Cordier's, also last month, for $4,500.

The example auctioned at Heritage - also featuring the signature of Lyn Lary, Ruth's New York Yankees teammate - scored a final price of $2,031.50.

This was slightly less than the $3,107 achieved by a slightly-scuffed ball signed by just Babe Ruth, auctioned on February 7.

Elsewhere in the autographs and memorabilia markets, other Ruth autographs have been known to command prices three or four times higher.

But even this value was dwarfed when Babe Ruth's 'most important bat' auctioned in the US, last year. It slugged towards an incredible final hammer price of $537,750.
