Charles-Diana wedding cake world record up 16.20% pa

A new world record for a slice of cake from the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana has been set at a UK auction.

The piece of cake sold for £1,756 at PFC Auctions on May 24.

It surpassed the previous record of £1,000, set in August 2008 - corresponding to a 16.20% pa increase.

The 31-year-old slice arrived at the sale double wrapped in its original waxed paper and housed in its original printed white presentation box.

The strong showing of the cake will not surprise those who follow the royal memorabilia markets closely; Princess Diana is a huge draw at auction.

Signed photos of Diana rose in value by 19.60% pa between 2000 and 2011, from £1,250 ($1,960) to £8,950 ($14,040), according to the PFC40 Autograph Index, while her replica bridal shoes, made in case of a mishap with the first pair, sold for £36,000 ($56,600) at a UK auction last year.

The lot was accompanied by a slice of cake from the wedding of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, along with wedding breakfast cards, an official invitation, two tickets and an order of service from the 1973 nuptials.

A slice of cake from the wedding of Wills and Kate sold for £1,917 at the same auction, the first piece of cake from the wedding to appear.
