Collectors ready to duel over John Wayne eye patch at Heritage sale

Heritage Auctions is hosting an auction of John Wayne collectibles in Los Angeles that is sure to have movie memorabilia investors saddling up and sallying forth.

The auction, which takes place from October 3 - 6, will offer a vast range from the collection of John Wayne Enterprises, including a black eye patch worn by John Wayne in his 1969 Academy Award winning role True Grit, and the cowboy hat he wore in the film's 1975 sequel, Rooster Cogburn.

The Golden Globe Wayne received for True Grit is also on offer.

The collection is rounded out with more than 400 other costumes from his 170-film career, including Sands of Iwo Jima and The Green Berets, over 50 movie scripts, many containing Wayne's handwritten notes, as well as personal documents such as his driving licence and American Express card.

"The John Wayne collection is a time capsule of classic Hollywood and US history that has remained carefully preserved by his family since John Wayne died 32 years ago in 1979," said Greg Rohan, Heritage's president.

"We anticipate attracting a wide range of people to the auction, from serious collectors and loyal fans to movie fans and the simply curious."

Estimates for individual items range from $100 to $50,000.
