Elton John's mother auctions treasures from her son's glittering career

It isn't unusual for mums to sort through old objects in the attic, remembering the lives of their children who have long-since left home.

But there's an added bonus when you're Elton John's mum: the stuff up there could also be worth a lot of money.

The sort-out follows John's mother Sheila's decision to move to a smaller house. And the good news is that collectors and fans will have a chance to own the very personal collection from her attic.

Among the items due to auction in Sussex, south England, are tour jackets, VIP passes used by Sheila to get into her son's gigs and more than 100 gold and platinum discs.

Making mum proud: Elton John onstage in 2007

According to reports, Sheila's collection was amassed over a period of roughly 38 years, in which time Elton John has sold around 250 million records and been awarded with an OBE.

The auction will be held by Gorringes auction house, and is due to take place on October 19.

As it happens, the Rocket Man whose hits include his Princess Diana tribute Candle in the Wind is no stranger to the auction block.

In June of this year, The Cigarette Girl, a stunning and stylish Art Deco statuette owned by the singer was sold at Bonhams for £25,200.
