Kendall & Nebel's war book to auction at PBA Galleries

George Kendall and Carl Nebel's The War Between the United States and Mexico Illustrated is among the upcoming highlights at PBA Galleries in San Francisco.

The rare book is expected to make $10,000-15,000 in an Americana auction on May 14.

Mexican American Kendall
Kendall was a pioneering war correspondent

Kendall was editor of the New Orleans Picayune and a pioneering journalist. In 1851 he travelled alongside the US army during the Mexican-American war, reporting on events as they happened.

On his return from the frontlines he enlisted the help of artist Carl Nebel to produce a series of paintings to accompany a short history of the war - of which the present volume is one of the few surviving copies.

It's described by the auction house as a "magnificently produced portfolio by...the first modern war correspondent".

The original ship's wheel from the USS Hayes is also on offer, with a valuation of $7,000-10,000.

The USS Hayes saw action in the Pacific throughout the second world war, including the invasion of the Philippines and the rescue of survivors from Mount Hood.

It was decommissioned in 1958 and scrapped in 1973.
