Nelson Mandela memorabilia to sell ahead of birthday celebrations

An unusual selection of Nelson Mandela memorabilia is going up for sale in South Africa on July 17, a day before the former president's birthday commemorations.

A portion of the proceeds from the Stephan Welz & Co sale will go to the Foundation for Rural Development, which is run by Mandela's granddaughter Ndileka Mandela.

The collection of presidential oddities is led by an oil painting on leather by South African artist Alan Dent, which depicts the 10 members of the African National Congress embroiled in the Rivonia Trial that eventually led to Mandela's conviction.

It is estimated to sell for up to $37,500.

Nelson Mandela handprints
Other prints of Mandela's hands exist, yet this is a unique original, from which no copies were made

It has been seven months since the anti-apartheid leader died on December 5, 2013, and the market for his memorabilia is booming. The most popular items are signed photographs, with one initially valued at $4,460 selling in South Africa for $8,113.

Also selling are original handprints from Mandela, of which no editions were made. A unique item, they are expected to sell for $28,000.
