Original Titanic deckchair to auction for up to $117,000

An original deckchair from the Titanic is to cross the block at Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, UK on April 18 with a valuation of around ?80,000 ($117,124).

The CS Mackay-Bennett, a salvage ship tasked with clearing bodies from the waters around the wreck site, recovered the chair from the freezing waters of the Atlantic in 1912.

Andrew Aldridge, of Henry Aldridge and Son, explained to the Daily Mail: 'It is incredibly rare to find something of that size that was on Titanic, was salvaged and that still exists today.

"You would not use it for practical purposes but have it on display. It would make a great conversation piece. There were a couple of thousand deckchairs on board Titanic and many of them were found floating on the wreck site.

"We have been able to access the Mackay-Bennett's log book, which confirmed the crew not only picked up deckchairs but that the ship's carpenter spent time repairing some of them on the way back to Halifax."

The Titanic continues to inspire fascination to this day. In 2013, the violin famously played by bandleader Wallace Hartley as the ship went down made ?900,000 ($1.3m) at Henry Aldridge.
