Putting the X Factor in collectibles? Cheryl Cole empties her closet for charity

Pop star Cheryl Cole, who reached fame in recent years for her role as a judge on talent show the X Factor, is selling off 20 of her famous dresses.

She was controversially dropped by the show earlier this week, and says she wants to focus on new projects, starting with the auction next Monday, June 13, at 9am (UK time).

The bidding will last for two weeks, with 10 dresses initially included, followed by a new dress put up for sale every day. The auction will be held on the website of online fashion retailer ASOS, and the money raised will go to charity.

Dresses in the sale include Cole's extravagant 3.1 Phillip Lim playsuit, which she wore at the X Factor audition in 2009, which would normally cost £318.50 ($524.10).

Along with this, her Hervé Léger bandage dress that she wore on a night out in 2008 is also being sold off. It would have cost £1,300 ($2,139.29) new off the hanger.

She certainly has been busy recently, as yesterday also saw the launch of her own charity site, The Cheryl Cole Foundation, in conjunction with The Prince's Trust.

The proceeds from the sale will be given to the new charity, and put towards new projects.

Other frocks up for auction include those designed by star names in the fashion industry, like Giles Deacon, and Paul and Joe.

Speaking about her new ventures in The Sun, Cole said she "knew auctioning clothes would make some money for charity but also I'm lucky enough to own some amazing clothes which I know would be very beneficial to someone else."

Whereas celebrity memorabilia related to the likes of Madonna and Marilyn Monroe could offer a path to 'sure thing' investments, collectibles linked to newer celebrities are not always guaranteed to fare well in terms of value and provide a good investment.

Whether the dresses owned by Cheryl Cole will be worth more money in the future depends on whether she keeps a continued high-profile status - which for now is open to debate.

Put simply: she has got some way to go until she has the same appeal to collectors as memorabilia owned by the likes of Madonna and Marilyn Monroe.
