This Gibon guitar is among those which
'sounded good and played well' for Gere

Also appearing for sale is a selection of amplifiers, as well as iconic guitars that belonged to Albert King, Peter Tosh and James D'Aquisto.

The sale is expected to realise in the region of $1,000,000.

"I never planned to put together a collection," said Gere, whose film appearances have included Pretty Woman, Chicago and the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There.

"I just bought ones that I liked, the ones that sounded good and played well. Some are very special."

Among the sale's highlights is a 1958 Gibson Flying V electric guitar once owned by bluesman Albert King.

King's guitar is expected to be the star lot of Gere's collection which is estimated at $1m overall.

"Although it's more than a little painful to let them go, each one has been played, loved and appreciated- and will be again," said Gere.

The sale will also feature guitars that once belonged to Bob Marley and the Wailers guitarist Peter Tosh and the guitar manufacturer James D'Aquisto.

The auction's proceeds will go towards humanitarian projects around the world.
