The letter was written hours before the Titanic sank

It was written by Esther Hart, mother of Eva Hart, who would become the most famous survivor of the disaster, known for criticising the lack of lifeboats.

Henry Aldridge and Son commented: "The importance of this legendary item cannot be overstated, being the only known surviving example of its type to have been written on that fateful day, surviving the sinking, and having belonged to such a well known survivor".

Henry Aldridge and Sons currently holds the record for any item of Titanic memorabilia, after it sold the violin used by bandleader Wallace Hartley for an impressive $1.7m - read the extraordinary story here.
