A silver loving cup presented to the captain of the Carpathia by "the unksinkable" Molly Brown is to lead a sale of Titanic memorabilia at RR Auction.

Bidding on the extraordinary lot will start at $25,000, with the sale due to close on April 24.

RR Auction silver Titanic cup
The silver cup was presented to Captain Arthur Rostron of the Carpathia by Molly Brown

Captain Arthur Rostron piloted the Carpathia at speed through the iceberg-filled waters of the North Atlantic to reach the stricken Titanic after hearing its distress signal early on April 15, 1912.

In all around 710 survivors were rescued from the sea, although many more perished.

Rostron was highly decorated following his return, receiving the Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress among a wealth of other honours.

Margaret "Molly" Brown collected donations from wealthy passengers aboard the Titanic in order to ensure the wellbeing of survivors.

She also organised a ceremony in which the crew of the Carpathia were presented with red ribbons and Rostron with the cup.

It is inscribed: "In grateful recognition and appreciation of his heroic and efficient service in the rescue of the survivors of the Titanic on April 15th 1912".

This year will mark the 102 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Last year the violin played by bandleader Wallace Hartley as the ship went down made $1.7m - setting a new world record for memorabilia from the tragedy.
