The box originally contained a Matchbox No 58 BEA coach

The lot, which originally contained a Matchbox No 58a BEA coach when new in 1958, was among the stars of the Wally Walters Matchbox Auction.

Toy collectors will pay a premium for rare packaging, provided it’s in very good condition. Recently a Palitoy plastic bag displaying the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back logo sold for £240 ($305).

Other highlights included a boxed No 15b Rotinoff Super Atlantic ballast tractor that sold for £2,900 ($3,619).
