White House rocking chair valued in excess of $70,000

A White House rocking chair used by various presidents is expected to exceed $70,000 at Nate D Sanders.

The sale will close on December 17.

Lyndon Johnson gave the rocking chair to a White House photographer

The chair stood in the White House for a number of years during the administrations of Dwight Eisenhower, John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

Johnson later gave it as a gift to George Szabo, a photographer on the White House staff.

Kennedy had a particular predilection for rocking chairs as he had suffered all his life with a bad back and found the action soothing.

He owned a large number of rockers, one of which sold for $87,500 at Heritage Auctions in 2013.

We have this genuine strand of Kennedy's hair for sale.

Other pieces of presidential memorabilia offered in the sale include a pair of eyeglasses belonging to Zachary Taylor, who held the top job between 1849 and 1850.

The case displays his initials etched in gold.

With just 16 months in office, Taylor is one of the shortest serving US presidents. A decorated hero of the Mexican-American war (1846-1848), he was voted in on a wave of patriotic fervour but died of a mysterious illness soon afterwards.
