William L Price table from circa 1901 brings $237,500 World Record price

A large trestle table has sold for $237,500 over its $30,000-40,000 presale estimate in an auction in Lambertville, New Jersey. The sale happened on Saturday (February 25).

The rare table dates to circa 1901. It was designed by William L Price and came to auction from a private Delaware collector.

According to the table's lot notes, it is unsigned and measures 29 ½" x 84" x 40". The auctioneer described the desk as "one of the very best statements of the Arts and Crafts Movement in America."

Billed as a "masterwork", the table has starred in "American Homes and Gardens" and "House and Garden magazine" issues published as far back as 1906.

Later publications, like "On the Brink of the 20th Century: The Architecture of William L. Price" published by the University of Pennsylvania, featured the desk in 2000.

This successful sale is testament to the ongoing strength of the Art Deco furniture markets in recent times.
