Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's hair triples estimate

A lock of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's hair has sold for ?35,000 ($53,520) at Sotheby's.

The lot exceeded an estimate of ?12,000 ($18,349) by 191.6% when it crossed the block in a sale of music memorabilia in London on May 28.

Mozart lock hair
The lock of Mozart's hair belonged to comoser Arthur Somervell

It was taken from the composer's head after his death and is housed in a locket inscribed: "Hair of W.A. Mozart. Part of a lock given me by Karl Anschutz he having received it from his mother to whom it was given by the great composer's widow. Given by me to Arthur Somervell, Jas ColletǪ

"Ansch??tz gave it me some time between the years 1848 & 1851 when he was in London."

Somervell, an acclaimed English composer, married Collet's daughter in 1890. The locket has since been passed down the years as a prized family heirloom.

Anschutz was a German composer who may have had a familial connection with Mozart.

The auction follows the strong recent sale of a lock of Lincoln's hair, which realised $25,000 at Heritage Auctions earlier this year.
