You can go 'Back To The Future' at Profiles in History's iconic memorabilia sale

"Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!" So exclaimed Dr Emmett Brown in Back To The Future II before travelling to the year 2015 in his flying DeLorean car time machine.

Today, a quarter of a century after it was released, the Back To The Future series remains one of the most popular film trilogies of all time - and it was only a matter of time before its memorabilia appeared on the auction block.

Auction house Profiles in History, no stranger to iconic memorabilia, will do the honours later this year when it auctions the one and only screen-used "resizing" jacket, as worn by star Michael J Fox in the 1989 sequel.

As the press release explains: "When Doc Brown and Marty arrive in the year 2015, Doc asks Marty McFly [played by Fox] to put on clothes similar to Marty Jr [his son in 2015]. To help him pass for a contemporary teenager, Doc Brown gives Marty the latest in high-tech outerwear.

"The item that Marty puts on after the self-lacing Nike shoes is this resizing future jacket. There was only one resizing jacket made for the movie."

while, in reality, a team of set hands and wires made the effect possible

In the film, the jacket appears to "resize" to suit whoever happens to be wearing it. In reality, there were several stage hands lying on the ground under Fox, holding several cables which ran into the jacket and made it apparently "shrink to fit".

According to Profiles in History's press release, "All the cables, wires and even the flashing light button are still attached. [This is] one of the rarest and most sought-after props from one of the most iconic Sci-Fi movies ever made [and] comes with a custom plexiglass display case."

Marty McFly's jacket is set to auction with an estimate of $25,000-$50,000 in December, alongside iconic props from Batman, Blade Runner, Superman Returns and Terminator Salvation. Watch this space for more upcoming news on the sale.
