Giacometti Grande Femme

One of 50 experiments Giacometti produced of the work

He was commissioned to produce the work by the architect Gordon Bunshaft in the mid-1960s. Bunshaft was working on his plans for the Chase Manhattan bank in New York City and wanted a pair of 65 foot male and female figures for the central plaza.

Giacometti produced a number of experiments, 10 female (including the present specimen) and 40 male.

Ultimately, he was unable to adapt his style to the enormous scale required and so was forced to withdraw from the project.
