Kenner Obi-Wan Kenobi sets new record

A near mint 1978 Kenner Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi figurine headlined Hake Americana’s much anticipated 50th Anniversary auction last month.

The figurine was sold in its original blister pack and pulled in $76,700.

That appears to be a world record for a Star Wars figurine.

This figure is the rare Double Telescoping variant

This is the ultra rare Double Telescoping lightsaber variant. Only a small number were produced before the design was changed to the Single Telescoping lightsaber.

This is one of the highest graded examples ever to be offered.

Meanwhile, a 1978 Kenner “Yellow Hair” Luke Skywalker figure also achieved an extraordinary result of $50,622.

In the political section of the sale, a 1920 jugate Cox and Roosevelt campaign button realised $47,279.

The lot is the best of four surviving specimens, making it a must for serious collectors of US campaign badges.

Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Americana, said: “It was a sale for the history books.

“First and foremost, it was the highest-grossing individual sale of our half-century in business, and it also capped our most successful year ever, in terms of the grand total for all sales conducted within a twelve-month period...

“The excitement and high prices it generated told us in no uncertain terms that the state of the market for high-quality, impeccably provenanced vintage collectibles is stronger than ever.”
