Neil Young’s lifetime collection crosses the block

Julien’s handled the sale of Neil Young’s lifetime collection over the weekend.

A wealth of pieces from Young’s long musical career were featured, as well as items linked to his other passions - including a large number of Lionel model trains.

The standout lot was a 1953 Buick Roadmaster Skylark convertible, which made $400,000 against an estimate of $300,000.

The model was built in a run of 1,690 to commemorate 50 years since the marque’s founding.

This one was the first off the production line, which (when combined with Young’s star power) helped boost its value.

The Roadmaster Skylark generally sells for around $120,000.

Young’s train collection received the majority of press in the run-up to the auction. Topping this section was a rare prototype Lionel 57 AEC switcher.

A switcher is a locomotive generally used to move cars around in the train yard, while AEC (1912-1979) was a British engineering company most famous for producing London’s iconic red Routemaster buses.

The model sold for $11,250.

Young said in an interview with Billboard magazine: “Collecting all of these items have been my great joy.

“They have provided a source of inspiration, fun and creativity throughout my life. Now it is time to share them with others in the world whom I hope will enjoy and love them as much as I have.”
