40 period film costumes go on display at the BYU Museum of Art

A collection of 40 costumes used in period films has gone on display as part of an exhibition celebrating the role of clothing in movies and art.

The costumes will be displayed alongside works of art, celebrating the role of costume in telling a story

CUT! Costume and the Cinema opened on July 11 and closes on December 6 at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art in Utah.

Produced by the London costume house Cosprop Ltd, the exhibition looks in-depth at the art of costume design and making, with more than five centuries represented in the collection.

Included are costumes worn by Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig and Uma Thurman in films such as Sherlock Holmes, Pirates of the Carribean, Sense and Sensibility and The Phantom of the Opera.

Cosprop won its first Academy Award in 1986 for its work on A Room with a View, and has supplied costumes for 34 Oscar-nominated movies - picking up another gong for The Duchess in 2009.

The company also won an Emmy for the costumes seen in Downton Abbey.

The museum will also display a selection of works from its own permanent collection, demonstrating "how wardrobe detail served similar purposes in portraiture from many of the same eras and settings as are seen in the featured films."
