Big Lebowski bathrobe auctions with 302% increase on estimate

The bathrobe worn by Jeff Bridges as The Dude in cult movie The Big Lebowski has seen strong results as part of a Hollywood auction of film props and costumes.

The Dude bathrobe
The Big Lebowski was a cult hit, spawning its own religion since its release in 1998

Held on March 2, the robe achieved some of the most positive results in the sale, selling for $18,500 and making a 302.1% increase on its $4,600 high estimate. It sold alongside The Dude's T shirt, socks and underwear, to complete his outfit.

The Big Lebowski, a Coen Brothers film, was first released in 1998 and instantly garnered a dedicated following, who now meet for an annual convention known as Lebowski Fest.

The movie has also spawned a whole new religion since its release. "Dudeism", a way of life based on the actions of the movie's main character, now has thousands of followers, with Bridge's book, The Dude and the Zen Master, serving as its holy scripture.

The robe is actually one of three worn by Bridges during the film, and was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. It was described by the auction house as a "collectible above all collectibles".

Also featuring in the sale was a gun used by Jamie Foxx's character in Quentin Tarantino's latest film, Django Unchained, which sold for $13,000.

Featuring in the final battle and used by several other characters during the film, the Remington cap and ball pistol was painted with a brass effect at Tarantino's request by expert Thell Reed, who was present at the sale to answer any questions.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has original props from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope for sale.
