Columbo’s iconic fawn raincoat to make $120,000?

The iconic fawn raincoat the late Peter Falk (1927-2011) wore as disarmingly dishevelled TV detective Columbo is to star in an auction at Bonhams.

The show ran for 35 years between 1968 and 2003, with Falk remaining in the title role for the entire run.

Columbo’s shtick was his unthreatening appearance and dopey demeanour, which disguised a razor sharp intelligence.

This raincoat was Columbo's trademark

While most TV shows have a huge number of identical costumes, this coat looks to be the original – which Falk actually brought along from his personal wardrobe.

Falk wore it throughout the entirety of the show, although other jackets were artificially worn down into a similar state of disrepair.

The lot is easily one of the most iconic pieces of TV memorabilia ever offered at auction. There are very few costumes out there that have been consistently worn for well over three decades.

Oh and just one more thing.

The lot includes Columbo’s equally tattered shoes.

It’s expected to make around $80,000-120,000 in the TCM Presents...Out Of This World! Sale in LA on November 21.

Other highlights will include the original Robby the Robot prop/costume from celebrated 60s sci-fi show Lost in Space.
