First touring 1963 Batmobile to make up to $500,000 on December 6?

The first touring Batmobile (built in 1963) is set to cross the block at Heritage Auctions on December 6 with a valuation of up to $500,000.

The car was designed as a publicity stunt by DC Comics as the Batman craze grew in intensity.

Batmobile 1963 Heritage
The Batmobile started out as a 1956 Oldsmobile 88

It toured the East coast of the US and predates the model used in the iconic TV series starring Adam West, which first appeared on screens in 1966.

It disappeared for a number of years, before being found in a field in New Hampshire in 2008. Since then it has been fully restored.

Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music at Heritage Auctions, commented: "This is a great piece of lost Pop Culture and Americana.

"After it was removed from the field, it went through a few owners before the most recent owner, Toy Car Exchange, put the car through a painstaking frame up restoration with the original engine and other original parts lovingly restored and rebuilt.

"This is from before replicas of the Barris TV Batmobile were made and available for touring. Those were known as 'ABC TV Batmobiles,' and later on as the Barris Batmobile or 1966 Batmobile."

Last year the original screen-used 1966 Batmobile achieved $4.6m in a sale at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona.
