Julie Andrews' Do-Re-Mi dress. Another dress worn by Andrews in The Sound of Music sold for $38,400 at Julien's in 2012

The sale formed part of the auction house's Hollywood Auction, running from July 28-29 in California. The entire collection sold for $1.3m, an 8.3% rise on the pre-sale estimate of $800,000-1.2m.

The dress that Andrews wore during the signature song for the musical film was not included in the collection. However, the sale did star the dress she wore when singing the classic "Do-Re-Mi" to the Von Trapp children and the yellow skirt and blouse from Maria's honeymoon return.

Also included was the purple wool cape that Andrews wore during the escape and final sequence.

The collection also featured a set of all seven Von Trapp children school uniforms, and the jacket worn by Duane Chase as Kurt in the So Long, Farewell sequence.

Angela Cartwright's Brigitta costume from the Do-Re-Mi montage was also present, as was her dress from the wedding scene, and three costumes worn by Chairmain Carr as Leisl.

It was accompanied by a four-page typewritten story of the Von Trapp family, signed by the real-life Maria, which explains more about the family and their eventual escape from Third Reich-controlled Austria.

"Without question, this is the most comprehensive collection of signature costumes from The Sound of Music any institution or collector could ever hope to obtain," read the lot description.

We are currently offering Julie Andrews' autograph for sale.

The cane was given to a Chaplin historian by the man himself - provenance doesn't come much better than that

Also selling on day one of the auction was Charlie Chaplin's "Tramp" cane from Modern Times (1936), which made an outstanding 133.3% increase on its $150,000 high estimate to sell for $350,000.

It came with exceptional provenance, having been gifted to the French journalist and Chaplin historian Maurice Bessey by the beloved comedian himself.

Judy Garland Wizard of Oz dress Dorothy
The present dress is different to the one selected for the film, which was chosen as it better represented a young girl from Kansas

The high profile sale also included one of the dresses worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, which sold for $300,000 - a 150% increase on its $120,000 high estimate.

Virtually identical to the Debbie Reynolds-owned dress that sold for $1.2m in 2011, both were used during the first two weeks of filming, but neither appeared in the final version, as the film's producer decided to alter Dorothy's appearance.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fantastic signed photograph of the young Judy Garland for sale.
