Sir Christopher Lee's Saruman staff to feature in November sale at Bonhams

A wizard's staff used by Sir Christopher Lee in his role as Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy will auction at Bonhams New York on November 24 with a $100,000-150,000 estimate.

It will provide one of the headline lots of There's No Place Like Hollywood, a sale held in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies.

The staff, which is six foot tall and topped with a blown glass sphere, is among the most recognisable props from the films.

It's appearing at auction for the first time, having been in Sir Christopher Lee's personal collection since filming wrapped in 2003.

He will also consign a sword known as Anduril, which was used by Aragon and carries an estimate of $150,000-200,000.

It's one of only four swords used onscreen by the character and was presented to Lee by model builders the Weta Workshop.

He commented: "Since production finished on the set of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, I've treasured these important pieces of film history in my private collection.

"More than a decade has passed and I feel it is now time that someone else is able to enjoy their magic. The dedicated film memorabilia auction at Bonhams in New York will provide the ideal stage."

Gimli's axe sold for $180,000 at Julien's Auctions in December last year.
